Bio diesel - Anyone tried one of these?

15pp litre? Amazing value. Bet there's a catch. There always is.
Yeah there we go - it's based on you getting your raw materials at 0 pp litre.

So who's going to give you free raw materials? Forget it. Pointless exercise.

£1,300 for an oil drum, a big plastic funnel and a few other bits and pieces, seems a bit expensive if you ask me.

There is going to be some seriously long payback time on that gear unless you do very, very high mileage.

Is it worth it, over something you can knock together yourself?

Most chip shops and takeaways will gladly give you their waste oil for free.

Wrong, they are now charging a small rate because many oil suppliers to them take it away in exchange get a little drum of fresh.
I know because I collect to use!

It may be wrong in your area, but I've just started collecting WVO, due to SVO prices going through the roof, and I can't collect it quick enough. Try shopping around, I'm sure you'll find plenty of people willing to give it away.

Even if you had to pay a small amount per litre, it's still a huge saving over standard diesel.

If the savings are huge - don't you think there'll be a major bandwagon effect? It may be 'cheap as chips' at the moment but it won't be cheap for long.

That's true. That's the reason that normal off the shelf veggie oil has gone so expensive, because everybody is jumping on the bandwagon. When I first started using veggie 8 years ago, I think I was paying around 30 pence a litre, now it's over a quid in most places.

That's also the reason I'm trying to stockpile as much waste oil as I can, whilst I can still get plenty of it. ;)

I think there are a few waste disposal/transfer regulations covering this, and you and the shop could be in a bit of trouble if you are not a registered carrier/disposal company

I think there is a size limit and you must not be a business transporting.
Basically, anything that involves poor folks having a better life is stamped on!

lets assume you save £1a litre and you get 40 to the gallon thats roughly £4.50 a gallon so if you do 400 miles a week thats £45 saved £200 pcm thats £2.400 a year

now thats excluding your time excluding spare parts like filters excluding the hassle of several hours a week looking for supplys in an ever decreasing market and then having to pay more and more as supplys dwindle
put on top off that any tax you may have to pay because you have exceded the tax free limit

now if the price of oil goes up you better off if it fall a bit your worse off

now what happens iff the costs mean you only save 18p a litre youl take 5 years to break even
oo and dont forget the cost off conversion to tun on biofuels ;)
