Hi can anybody help me please. We have taken up some old slate tiles in our kitchen and have found bitumen on the concrete underneath. We would like to now lay quarry tiles but are unsure if the bitumen needs to come off first. If so, what is the best way to remove it and will it hurt the concrete. spygirl

If the bitumen is sound, leave it alone. Just use a decent powdered adhesive (use flexible adhesive if you are unsure). You must ensure that the floor is very clean (no grease) before you start tiling though (sweep, vacuum, then mop twice).
I've had no problems with Feb Fastset wall and floor tile adhesive even when tiling with porcelain tiles onto bitumen. Sets in 3 hours and used to cost me about a tenner for a 20kg bag that'll cover about 4 square metres.
