Hi,
After moving into a 1960s house we had a flood that started lifting old vinyl tiles under the carpet. We decided to remove them all and lay new carpet.
Whilst scraping them I noticed a bitumen Smell and residue. Niavly I thought this would air out. After nearly a year the smell had still not gone. It had infact penetrated everything in the room. I had to chuck our curtains, new underlay and carpet, even the sofa!
To get rid of the smell I painted three coats of APD primer on and used a latex self leveling compound. Two months on from this with new carpet down (&sofa!) The smell is back! Ahhh!
I'm now thinking a liquid DPM would stop the smell?
Any ideas on if this will work would be massively appreciated. My concern is the liquid DPM is bitumen based, would we therefore just be adding to the smell? I certainly can't afford to take the floor up, it has to be something to cover the floor.
Thank you
