The charger has given up for my 9-year-old drill. My local tool store reckons that none available now, which is what I thought. Is it possible to use a small power supply that I have which is similar voltage and rating as the original charger, that is, 12V and 220mA, as a charger? Connection to the battery would be by crocodile clips, I know which is +ve on the battery. Anyone ever tried this? Any advice appeciated, thank you.

No problems with that - the voltage should be the same though......if your 'new' charger has a higher current output than the original, don't charge it too long, and watch for heat build up.
I would have thought the batteries would be well goosed by now!
John :)

Not a good idea as battery cells can explode or leak if charged incorrectly.

batteries often charge from different contacts to the output contacts on the battery[3 or more contact points]
so if you can patch in to the charger rather than the actual batter then any electronic control will be in the circuit

have you got a picture off the battery as dewalt and bxd are often the same fittings for charging the battery
