I have come across this problem a lot in the past two years. Yesterday i went to a bahama and the working pressure at the boiler was 2.5mbar. I removed the gas valve and out come a bucket of black dust. I have been adviced to fit filters on the line but is this the answer.

Flashback arresters are one way valves which are fitted onto the regulators of oxy/acetylene gas welding/burning cylinders/bottles.

They are fitted between the regulators and the rubber hoses, one per cylinder. Further check valves should also be fitted between the hoses and the torch.

The purpose of the valves is to prevent flashbacks from the torch going back down the hoses into the cylinders. Flashbacks can occur through faulty equipment or operator error.

Acetylene is particularly dangerous, it can burn inside a cylinder for days, the cylinder can utimately explode like a bomb. If the fire brigade suspect a burning Acetylene cylinder they will evacuate an area, sometimes for days. Then keep spraying the cylinder with water to keep it cool until it burns itself out.

These are the only arresters I have heard of, would they have such a device on boilers? I can't help with the filters.

my brother saw a acetaline cylinder "catch fire" he said it went like a rocket through two solid brick walls. guess he was lucky it never exploded, although i have seen one on a tv prog that did
