Black mortar for granite driveway

Hi there

Guessing this is a real dumb question but what is the black/dark grey mortar used for the cobble setts in these photo?

Is it just regular mortar with black colour powder mixed in? Particular type of very dark sand? Or some kind of specialist driveway mix?

Looks like black mortar ( using cement dye ) Is it hard or can you poke a screwdriver into it easily.
 
Thanks JJ, those are just example photos from google, so no idea what the texture is like. I'm laying some granite cobbles myself and quite like the look of the dark mortar against the lighter granite. Chap down the road has something similar and it looks good, but I dont know him well enough to go poking around his patio!
