Hi,

Two of my bedroom walls seem to have black patches coming through the wallpaper. The wallpaper feels damp and in some areas its coming off.

Any idesa what it could be, is it the ventilation or the fact that the house is always kept warm, in which case would i need to install some sort of fan.

Would taking the wallpaper off and skimming the walls and then painting help?

Many thanks

sounds like mould. If you could give some more info like position of the room, type of construction, heating in house, level of ventilaton, has the house benn empty etc etc (in the meantime clean it off with a strong solution of bleach.) You need to get some ventilation into the room as well to help dry it out.

thanks for replying Thermo. The house isn't empty, and its always quite warm because of the granny. The mould is growing underneath the window seal and on the side wall.

On the second room the mould is also near the window.

So you think I should fit some ventillation fan or something?

Any suggestion on what type of wall fan....extractor fan maybe!!!!!

Thanks

I would try to find the cause of the dampness before doing anything else.

Is the guttering sound, clear of leaves and doing it job? Thats a common cause of damp walls.

No point adding ventilation if the guttering is fooked!

yes quite agree remove the cause of the dampness first if you can as mentioned, blocked gutter etc. It may just be the rooms need a little ventilation, from having windows opened from time to time

i have reduced now the mould which was on my bedroom walls behind some bedside cabinets and the lower part of my bed in the alcove formed by bedroom furniture.
its an outside wall and seems pretty cool to the touch..
the mould was on the surface of the emulsion finish and cleaned off easily with mould remover spray
my permanent solution was a weekly belt of a dehumidifier and ventilate the room (house) once a day..preferably when the heating is off...
i am in a bungalow and the condensation seems to travel around from kitchen and bathroom via the hall to this front room..
as i say the dehumidifier pulled a stack of water out and now the levels are better.
i will line the alcove area behind the cabinets and bed with some insulation in the spring.

glad its improving, but i would still give the area a clean off with neat bleach, its far more effective at killing the spores than mould remover.

thanks..i hesitate sometimes to use bleach etc as its so aggessive ...but if it does the job i will protect the carpet with plastic liners..
will be glad to see...and sniff...it gone.:)
