black spots on clothes

i\\\'ve been noticing black spots on my clothes after i take them out of the washing machine. they\\\'re about the size of a pen tip or marker tip.

does anyone have any thoughts on what this could be? i\\\'ve read about oil and grease perhaps leaking from inside the machine, but why the dots and not streaks or smudges? my old machine had this problem, but the marks were more like streaks and smudges, not dots.
