blank screen ?

hi, i have an emachines comp with windows xp on it, i left it on standbye and when i came to use it again the screen was just black with 3 little white marks at top and a very small white line ? [ just visible ]
when i used the keyboard to get somethink to happen, i get a message saying [ error, type any key to reboot ]
i tried it but it just repeated it and the more i tried it just done same thing
so i done a restore with the disc,s which it does as it should and can be seen on screen doing it.
then as in past it says press any key to reboot ? so im just going in circles
any help welcome .regarads. r.r.

Shutdown, unplug all peripherals except for keyboard, video and mouse, then boot into Safe Mode.

Does it work now? If not, what does it do?

thanks reply softus, no easy answer to this one/ tried what you said and came back with same screen setup -black and blank ,same wording etc.
also i removed anythink not needed, including usb card---ethernet card
rebooted safe mode with 1 h,drive in .no good tried same with other h,drive on its own , no good
done a restore on each h,drive seprately -- could see that on screen doing it/ disc came out pressed a key to reboot . nuffink /
left it unpluged overnight from mains with nothing plugged in, tried again. -no good same thing.
this went on over a week/
went to shop in the end, drop h,drives in he says and he will test em,
then phones up for the comp as well, .
phones up to tell me its ok/ cant find anythink wrong
charged a £5 and its been working ever since
all this and i only left it in standby mode .
anyway mean time i upgraded to a new comp/ so i got a spare now.
so as i said no real answer to what went wrong, only a long reply.
