Having reconfigured the waste plumbing I've ended up with a strap on boss on the soil pipe that is no longer needed. It had a 40mm pipe going into it with a rubber adapter so I just pushed in a 40mm blank, job done. Some time later I found the blank on the floor so I pushed it back in. Its now slowly working it's way out again. Is there a better fix? Can't find a solvent weld bung.

To solvent weld it, you would need a solvent weld boss adapter, a short piece of pipe and a blanking cap for the pipe.

Stick a self tapper in the top, brass one of course for the more pedantic among us.

Surely you mean Stainless Steel? Brass self tappers??

Terrain do a good 40mm solvent branch boss Part# 112.4.15 which you can put a 40mm end-stop/blank into.
A 32 would do.
