I've got a few bits of pipework to do and had decided that anything going underfloor/being covered over will be soldered for piece of mind, and compression fittings looks so bulky!
What sort of torch should I be looking at for occasional DIY use? Have heard the pencil type have poor heat transfer to joint.
Would something like this be any good?

I'm going to use the solder ring type fittings.
Is it just a case of clean up end of pipe, apply some flux (this OK http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=54490&ts=00865 ) to end of pipe (inside fitting as well?), assemble then heat joint/pipe until a solder ring appears?
I'll need a heat mat as well, but screwfix ones seem a bit expensive, or is the norm.... http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?cId=A435544&ts=01010&id=96228
