523i bmw will run okay when first started but after about 5/10 min it stalls.
if the car is moving it hesitates quite badly a couple of times and then runs fine without any further problems. If the car is at standstill it will stall. when you restart it then dies again and then start again and it runs fine. Is this a petrol filter issue or is it air getting into the fuel line?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

Try cleaning the idle speed control valve or even swapping it with one off another BMW to see if it's the problem, cheap fix if it sorts it...
Stevie.

Coolant temp sender too is worth changing for the cost of it

Sounds like the electronic ignition module to me. When it's cold it works and when hot it struggles.

Also try the flap on the air flow meter, they run like a pig when it's sticking, bit of WD40 normally sorts it...

The air-mass meter does not have a flap, there is no ignition module, and whilst the coolant temp sensor may be cheap, have you seen where it is? (They don't fail anyhow!)

The 523i (M52 engine) has a small air-hose, which is part of the crankcase venting system - it runs the length of the inlet manifold, and should be clearly visible with the (smaller) engine cover removed. This pipe is prone to collapsing and splitting - there is a modified item, and this would be my first port of call.

thanks for all you advice. i will have a look at these and let you know how i get on. it does seem strange however that the engine will stall once and then run fine with no sign of any further problem. thanks again and Happy New Year!
