My extension (when built) will have medium density block internal walls.

What's the pros and cons of both ways of plastering? Cost, time, finish, etc.

Or are there other options?

Solid plastering (hardwall, tough coat nowadays not browning) makes for a more hard-wearing wall and a better finish although it's debatable, but personally I think you can get an absolute perfect finish on backing plaster which you can't quite match on board. Most times it won't be noticeable tho.

disadvantages - more labour cost, won't hide blockwork shrinkage cracks

With dot and Dab you could board it all yourself and get someone to skim it and save cost.

For me dot and Dab every time nowadays, not done float and set for years apart from the odd wall.

Many thanks for your insight.

So for me, boarding myself to save costs and also hiding possible shrinkage cracks of the blocks has won the day
