I have an old Lath and plaster ceiling that is cracked, blown and generally in a bad way.

Would it be best to bring it down then plasterboard directly onto the joists (and put insulation between the joists) or overboard directly on the old plaster???? obviously i would need to find the joists if i keep the old stuff up. Is that particularly hard???

When putting up the boards do you put them up long way with the joists or across the joists.
Also is 12.5mm boards the best.

Thanks for any help.

If the ceiling is that bad,it's better to take it all down, wooden lath as well, and put the new 12.5 plasterboard sheets "across" the joists, staggering the joins in the boards as you go. It is also better fixing them with screws rather than nails. It's a good idea as well, to mark on the wall where the centres of the joists are, and then pencil lines drawn across the sheets take the guesswork out of where to put in the screws.

Roughcaster.

Thanks for that.
I think I will take it down.
Good advice on marking the walls.

Is it worth putting up insulation before the plasterboard?????

If it's a downstairs ceiling then there is no point using insulation. If it is upstairs and exposed in the loft then insulate it from above afterwards.

Galvanised clouts hold plasterboard better than screws.
