Hello, I'm really quite a beginner when it comes to most aspects of DIY, having just bought our first home (built 1954) I would like to do as much work myself as possible... starting with boarding the loft for storage. I just want to start with boarding the center, where I can comfortably walk, for some light storage then the rest at a later date.

The joists are 2"x4" and sit 14" apart, there is loose fill insulation inbetween them and the insulation rolled across the joists. There are a few wires running over the joists so am I correct in thinking that cross battening (correct?) then boarding on top is my best bet.

yep cross baton and then lay chipboard t&g loft boards across them. just a quick tip though your better off screwing the batons down rather than nailing or you might end up with cracks all over your ceilings below

ply is better than chipboard, though.

you can lay more insulation between the battens.
