Hi all. What's the best material to put down over (fairly tatty, not long for this world) carpets before I do stuff like pull plaster off/take down ceilings?

Would hardboard be OK, with carpet tacks and the joints taped up? Or should I go for something more substantial like chipboard?

Basically, it's one of those things that you don't want to spend much on since the carpets need replacing anyway, but it's just to make shovelling up easier.

Cheers, Mog

Is there a reason why you don't roll the carpet up and take it out?

Sorry - didn't mention it's the 1st floor. So with the floorboards (complete with nice gaps) I don't fancy the idea of all _that_ ending up in the downstairs ceiling void! So basically I'm sacrificing the carpets instead of putting polythene down. (and there'll still be dust that gets thru... :) )

if thats the case forget the hardboard !

once the work is done then roll up your carpet and ditch it along with all the mess!
