Hi
I'm wanting to board out the loft. 1st putting down some additional 6 x 2 joists and then chip board.
currently the roof is purlin, rafters and ties via the ceiling joists. the ceiling joists are nailed to the rafters at the wall plate and where the ceiling joists overlap in the middle there is another joist perpendicular over the top of the ceiling joists which is then nailed into each overlapped ceiling joist to tie them together between the eaves. also there are 2 upstands from the perpendicular joist to the ridge board.
my question in can I remove this perpendicular joist & upstands and tie the ceiling joists back together by screwing them together in their overlapped pairs. will this be adequate tie to prevent deflection? I could also add some struts to tie them to the big fat purlins too. This will allow me to add bigger joists unhindered.
thanks
