We've got a Ferroli combi-boiler and a new Honeywell thermostat. Some of the time, mainly first thing in the morning for 2-3 hours, the boiler boots up in response to the thermostat, but then cuts out after about a minute. There is still noise from the boiler like a fan or pump going round, and about 2-3 mins later the boiler again fires up for about a minute then cuts out again, and the cycle tends to repeat. During this cycle of on for a minute and then off again, the rads are only luke warm. As I write the rads have suddenly managed to get hot, so it's obviously decided to work now, but this problem doesn't seem to want to go away. Rads were bled last week. Any ideas ...?

When did the problem start? ie was it after the new thermostat was fitted or after rads bled etc?
Did you repressurise system to manufacturers recommended settings after bleeding - through filling loop.
Have you tried adjusting thermostat settings?
Is thermostat in the correct position? - not behind curtains!
Sorry if you have already checked the above!

Hey Ant - thanks for your reply.
We've recently had the boiler moved from one room to another as a part of an extension.
The boiler started cutting out as described within the first week of the boiler being in it's new position. The contractors said they had both pressurised the system and bled all the rads, including a new one. We mentioned the problem to the contractors who said it would more than likely be air in the system. After about 2-3 days, the problem just seemed to go away. The following week the thermostat was replaced as the old one was very old and we we're entirley convinced it was working properly. Another week later a final rad was added, and they were apparently all bled again, and everything has actually been working ok. Then 2-3 days ago we noticed the boiler was doing this on for 30 seconds then off thing again, and the rads struggle to get above luke warm. Then bizzarely, again as I write, the boiler's started to heat them all up again and stay on. But last night, when it was bloody freezing, they were all luke warm and it wouldn't stay on!
We're going to bleed all the rads ourselves today, hopefully that may rid us of the problem......?
Any comments appreciated.
Thanks again
Andy

Is the pressure setting on the gauge on the boiler set correctly and is it maintaining a constant pressure - ie not losing pressure. My boiler is 1-1.5 bar when cold rising as the water is heated - yours may be different. If the system is losing pressure then the boiler will switch off. Was the system flushed out when the boiler was moved? I wonder if there could be some sludge floating around in there?
