Boiler making a boiling noise like a kettle

Hey all!
We have a quite old but reliable boiler but recently it has started to make a noise like a kettle when either on or even when the central heating and hot water are off.

Any ideas??

Yes its called Kettling and its caused by sludge/scale in the heat exchanger of the boiler

I am sure there is loads about it in Bachos FAQ

Its a Maxol Homewarm 600, is there anything I can do?

Ive called a plumber and he said a flush would cause the boiler to blow up.

did he say why?

I am not sure what the heat exchanger on these is made of as I dont have that much experiance with them but am sure one of the others will interject
