Boiler not heating water cylinder

I have an old gas boiler with a gravity fed hot water system.

It does not appear to be heating the water in the cylinder at all!

There is a tapstat on the pipe between boiler & cylinder, similar to this: http://www.heatingcontrolsonline.co...html/acl-drayton-28mm-2way-tapstat-p-190.html

I have noticed that there is a temperature differential across the tapstat - the boiler side is hot, whilst the cylinder side is cold.

I have unscrewed the head, which I think *should* open the valve, and can operate the pin on the valve with my finger quite easily.

Is it possible or likely that the valve is stuck in the closed position, and if so is there any way to free it off without draining the system down and dissembling it?

If the valve is faulty, is it worth replacing it? I suppose it improves efficiency if the boiler is running for central heating and the hot water cylinder is already up to temperature, but does it make that much of a difference?

With the head removed you could try hitting the body of the valve and it may release the valve into the open position but that's all. It won't fix the valve that is just old and likely to stick again.

Bearing in mind the cost of tap stats and the age of your system that is not so easy to answer. Without the tap stat your hot water will get very hot and with youngsters or old people that would present a high risk of scalding.

At the moment you do not have totally independent control of Hot Water and Central Heating. So if your timeswitch is on the blink it would be good time to Fit a 28mm Motorised Valve and Cylinder Stat with a new programmer as that would give you independent control of Hot Water and Central Heating.

The cheapest good solution is to just replace the Tap Stat.

I think it would be unwise not to have control of the Hot Water temperature but thought you might be interested in knowing the option I mentioned
