If hanging a boiler on a stud wall is 4x1 timber enough to put in the wall to fix to?

4x1? 4x2 maybe, although 22mm plywood screwed and glued to the face of the studwork would be much better. Be aware though that hanging a boiler on a stud wall can cause serious noise issues due to vibration

Muggles +1 , screw 22mm ply to the batten ( when you locate it ) and also glue at same time

Well, I prefer to use cement board or hardie backer but... I had trouble burning the last lot of plasterboard I had left over from a job :)

And cover with plasterboard for fireproofing!

Most condensing wall hung boilers can be mounted on a combustible base. It'll say in the MIs, that a GS RGI will use to install the boiler, what's required.

If it's a 4x2 or even 3x2 stud wall, it'll support most boilers, plenty pads/dwangs/noggins behind the plasterboard & RGI is good to go!!

INSTALLING GAS BOILERS IS NOT A DIY JOB!!!

Ok, I concede that it's not a must:oops:. We usually do it for belt and braces and so that it looks better for decorating purposes.
