Hi there, sorry if I'm asking obvious questions, but I'm new to this so please play nice!

One week ago my gas boiler started making growling noises, and the odd banging. At the time I only had the hot water on, and couldn't find anywhere to get any air out, so I put the heating on too, and tried to bleed the rads (which all seemed fine). The noises dissapeared, and everything was still fine when I put it back to HW only for the rest of the week.

The trouble is, I came back after a weekend away, to find no hot water. The boiler comes on for about 5 seconds, bangs a lot, and cuts out, regardless of the thermostat setting. Having read a bit on here, I checked the pump, which is making an electrical humming, but is definitely not moving at all.

The obvious answer seems to be to change the pump, but before I do this has anyone got any ideas? I just wonder if the noises last week were a sign of anything else being wrong? I'm thinking that maybe there's a lot of rubbish in the pipes, so I'm going to drain the system tonight, but is there anything else I should do?

Thanks
