I have a Baxi central heating boiler approx. 18 years old, and last night while on, gave a loud clunk noise and turned off (no flame, no pilot light) I am now unable to turn the pilot light back on.

Any ideas/solutions

Cheers

You have not told us the model!

Do you know how to relight the pilot?

Will the pilot flame ignite?

Do you see a spark when you operate the igniter?

Are you holding the gas valve knob down for 30 sec???

Its a Baxi WM 30/3 RS. I've tried your suggestion to light the pilot with no luck.

I'm now trying to disassemble to check the themocouple. The plate which covers the main chamber has 4 wingnuts on it which i've removed, but it only pulls away about an inch. What elses needs to be removed (pipes etc.) to gain access.

cheers

Pull harder!. There is a load of insulation over the combustion chamber which snags on the case.

It would have been better to have answered my questions. There may be a simpler solution without opening the combustion door. That should only be done by a CORGI engineer anyway.

ask your last guy who serviced it to investigate, very simple boiler but have the usual dangers if repaired wrongly.

I have replaced the thermocouple, and the pilot can now be lit, but the boiler will only fire up for about 30 seconds before shutting down completely.

any ideas

Is the pump running - boiler may be shutting down due to overheating.

but the boiler will only fire up for about 30 seconds before shutting down completely.

Do you mean just the main burner or the pilot as well?

Feel the flow pipework from the boiler and near the pump, are the pipes very hot, are you sure the pump is circulating the water?

The main flame & the pilot go out after about 30 seconds

The pipes near the boiler & the pump are cool

If the boiler is definately not overheating it may be the pilot flame is not enveloping the thermocouple sufficiently once the main burner fires up.
