Hi there,

Our Thorn EMI Apollo (15/30B) gas boiler has recently given up the ghost. We have only had the house a year, and the heating has worked well up until the last month or so.

The problem started a week ago, the day after a British Gas engineer attempted a service. He couldn't finish the service because the boiler was 'sealed in' by a previous resident. The boiler does indeed have a red silicone type bead around it's perimeter, and also around the view port (which indecently has a burn mark etched into the boiler housing coming off it)

Now, the boiler is really difficult to start (can take 10-20 clicks of the ignition), and 5 times out of 10 when you let go of the gas valve the pilot goes straight out. When the pilot does eventually stays lit, it seems to do so if the the main flame isn't on.

When the main flame starts (on both high and low thermostats) it stays lit for anywhere between 5 minutes and several hours (mostly 5 minutes though) before the gas valve clicks out, shutting off the pilot and main flame.

Also, not consistently, sometimes the flame seems to look more orange than others.

Before the British Gas engineer came round (the reason he came round in fact) was because the whole system seemed to start making some randomly timed clunking sounds, that seemed to get louder over space of a minute or so and ended with a pretty loud clunk, after which the system continued to run fine. I could not isolate the source of the clunking, but it seemed loudest at the boiler and in the storage tank cupboard (where the pump and motorised valve is kept)

Has anyone encountered this combination of events in the past with this boiler? or has an idea what the problem/solution is?

We asked British Gas to look into it but because of the age of the boiler, they suggested replacing it with a condensing boiler, in the same space (almost a straight swap), and quoted £2300 all in.

A local CORGI engineer has quoted just short of £400 all in to replace the seal and gas valve, or £1600 all in (excluding flushing the radiators individually - only using a chemical flush of the whole system) for a new ideal IKOS condensing boiler.

Do these seem like sensible costs / courses of action? He has told us "he will have a look at what he can get at" with respect to quitening the heating..

We've got another guy coming for a second opinion (third if you include British Gas's sales pitch) next week.

I really have no idea about heating systems, other than what Google tells me, and am concerned that I make a decision to part with a lot of money (that might not fix the problem) based only on internet research. Then I found this forum!

Finally, with the weather being like it is, does anyone have any suggestions to prevent / reduce the risk of pipes freezing with a dysfunctional boiler?

Many thanks for reading this far!!

HHi there,

First off I am more than a little p1ssed – so apologies now.

Your boiler is old and no doubt shagged – but not necessarily irreparable.

Your BG engineer was probably an oik; and we need more info than what you gave us with respect to it being sealed.

Having a “burn mark” is not a good thing. REALLY.

Your restart troubles sound to me like a duff gas valve; but the state (from an engineer’s point of view)of the thermocouple is helpfully missing.

By the way – your boiler should only ever be run at the low setting.

You might get away with a descale, but I would aim to a new condensing boiler and save long term -15% vat remember.

Hi there, When I say sealed, I mean that at the point where the boiler should come away from it's wall mounting, i.e. to expose its innards, there is a bead of a red sealant...

The best way to demonstrate it is with pictures...

hey presto: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/Whitling2k/080209Boiler?authkey=Yg-K717-Odw

It's still not staying lit, and there is quite often a bubbling / trickling water noise from inside the boiler when the pump is running.

that red sealant is heat resistant silicon, a bit of a bodge job really. That heat mark on the casing is not a good sign, possible insulation damage on the combustion chamber panel and a lack of proper servicing.

whatever you do don't get the ideal icos boiler!

THEY ARE JUNK. The engineer who offered to fit it must be an idiot. Get some more quotes but avoid BG as they are overpriced and sub the work out anyway.

Wow - quick replies!

What's wrong with the Icos?

It was the local CORGI guy that offered to fit that one.. Problem is that we're new to the area and don't know any local plumbers!

the icos has to be the worst boiler on the market at the moment (but is cheap). The reliabilty is less than that of a chocolate teapot (look on this site for evidence). You can't go wrong with Vaillant or Worcester Bosch, some cheaper brands are Baxi and glow worm but mark my words. . . .

If you buy an ideal boiler (especially the icos and isar) you WILL regret it.

Thanks ever so much for the for the advice, We have got another engineer coming round for a second opinion on Monday so will see what he says about the problem, and will ask for the other guy to re-quote with one of the other boiler makes.

This is what scares me - How much we rely on a boiler but often have little say in which one we get - something you tend to just trust the experts with. Loads more research goes into buying a telly / stereo etc, but they are not relied on nearly as much..

There is tonnes of advise here on which boilers are good and not.

My favourite is the Atmos Intergas range.

The trouble is different installers like different boilers usually for the same reasons as the other guy making it difficult for the home owner to judge.

where in yorkshire??? i will be more than happy to give u a good price and a better boiler than the ideal isar roughly £1.275 for a vaillant eco tec 28 pro. depending on the house rads bathrooms etc, including installation. see if u can get a better price n a better boiler. id be very supprised if u did.

Wow, and I thought my previous installation was bodged!

It looks like a rather retro boiler. Ours was sealed to the wall and flue with expanding foam :)

its T I GAS im based out off Wakefield i have my own corgi registration n i work for local council let me know if your intrested
