Just a question for my knowledge on an open vent system does the boiler call for the pump for CH only? Or does it use it to heat up the stored water in the tank when I select HW only on the wall programmer.

Thanks

If installed correctly the pump is used for both heating and hot water.

The boiler ideally should have control of the pump, although it is not vital on all makes and models.

True, if it's a fully pumped system; but not if it's pumped CH, gravity HW.

Use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope to listen to the pump.

And I would hope the pump is wired to the pump connection on the boiler so that the pump overrun operates.

Dan, he has a Y-plan system IIRC.
