Book storage in rafters

I have an idea to store my books in the rafters of my loft. The idea is I will be able to see the artwork on the books and can probably store 9-12 books in each 45cm gap between the rafters.

I've already had a go with some netting but would like something that droop. Is there a cost-effective solution that will not interfere too much with the viewing of he book covers?

I'm thinking some kind of wire mesh but a heavy enough gauge that it will not bend. I looked at perspex but that was too expensive (I am looking at 1m x 8m approx on each half of the roof).

Would be great to get some inspiration as I'm not the most imaginative person.

Wire mesh eg chicken wire, find it in B&Q etc to have a look at. Stapled to the rafters, you can buy it in all kinds of thicknesses/stiffness. Bit weird though.

Not the best location for storing books as seasonal variations in temperature and humidity will affect the paper and binding of the books

They will probably go mouldy due to damp. And possibly filthy with dirt. Wire mesh will damage and scratch the covers.

How old is your roof?

Is it lined with felt? Or with breathable membrane?

Roof was replaced last year, so breathable membrane.

No damp up there, if they go funny over time I don't mind as they are all just in the loft already.

Yep, I understand that. I have a lot of books already in the loft, and some collectable toys and the like, and accept they aren't in prime storage conditions.

Thanks. Yep, agree it's a bit strange but I've been thinking about it for a while and reckon it'll look ok.
