Hi

I'm building alcove bookcases. Is there any advantage in rebating a bookcase back to accept the backing board, rather than glueing and screwing / nailing it onto the back?

It seems to me the main advantage of the rebate is that is helps you hold the bookcase square. Anything else?

Thanks

You don't see the edge, and it doesn't look like a flat pack from Argos.

OK cool, so it sounds like there is no advantage for an alcove bookcase where only the front will be seen. Thanks. I wondered if fitting it into a rebate added strength or rigidity. Maybe it does if just pinned?

The main think with any bookcase is to make sure the shelves are well constructed/supported. Many materials will quickly bow with the weight of books across the width of a typical alcove.
