Hello. So the boot can be opened without touching the release handle and cant be locked.
Does anyone know if the bit thats in the door should latch and stay latched if you push it up with your finger? If so I think that must need replacing.
Thanks.

Make, model, age?

When did you last clean and lubricate the pivoting mechanism?

Often the latching hook is misplaced and needs to be levered into the "open" position.

Please post photos.

Don't use your finger. The hook may snap shut on a strong spring.

Most seem to be a sort of movable hook, which is tripped to hook a bit of bar fixed on the boot lip. Unlocked they look like an open at the bottom U, as the boot is slammed shut the U rotates into the locked position. If it has rotated into that position with the boot open, press the unlock and pull the U to the open position with a thick screwdriver. It should then resume normal operation.

Thanks for your replies. I'll attach a picture of it as it is then what it looks like when pushed up.
It's definitely hasn't been serviced for at least 4 years.
It's a vw passat 2009

Pressing the release, with the screwdriver as in the second photo and tugging it, should allow the lock to move to the open position. Does that work? I'm still confused as to what your complaint is - are you saying that part works, but the boot still will not latch shut?

If so, the fixed bracket on the lip of the boot is adjustable, if that has come loose and been pushed down, it will be difficult/ impossible to get it to latch. They are usually fixed by a couple of bolts. Loosen those and you should be able to adjust it up and down. Too high and the boot lid will not seal properly, too low and the boot lid will not latch down.

When you say press release are you talking about the key fob? And do you mean tugging the screwdriver down? If so there's no resistance to pulling out down that bit won't lock at all.

What ever you would normally have to do, to release the boot to open it - combined with pulling the screwdriver down. The hook part in the lock, should then latch in the unlocked position - it may need a bit of an extra push with the screwdriver, to get it to latch in the open position.

I sse what you mean. I think its beyond that, you cant pull it down with the screwdriver as theres no resistance. It will just flop down on its own.
