During the wash cycle, as the machine prepares to spin and during the spin, a very loud noise starts which seems to be from a vibration inside the casing above and to the left of the drain pump. It starts about 20 seconds before it spins and when the machine stops spinning and reverts back to another part of the cycle the noise stops.
The machine is about 5 years old but we have a large family and want to see if we can fix it ourselves quickly.

Can anyone help with some advice please?

Did you find out the cause of this vibration? These is happening to our machine.

You could have a coin or clip trapped in the sump.

You can clear this by draining the machine via the drain pump filter
or by pass tube, tilting the machine (lean against cabinets) and then
removing the clips (pliers/vice grips) from the sump(bottom of drum)
and connection to drain pump.

You can then remove the rubber sump assemble which will contain a
ball which acts as a float valve to the drain pump

Vibration can be caused by many things, out of balance load, machine not
level, loose drum weights (front/top),worn bearings and worn shock absorbers.

The above tend to be worse at higher spin speeds -if you can distinguish
between say a rattling or juddering the former is likely to be a foreign object.

The others are harder to track down.....

In the end it turned out to be various rubbish caught in the machine around the drums rubber. Basically I think you need to dig around the machine and it's likely to be something in there.

We have checked the sump etc but have had thing caught in there before. This doesn't seem to be affected by the speed or the spin as such. More to do with the draining of the water when rinsing, the noise is low pitch and droning. I suspect maybe a pump bearing if there is some but the pump seem to work fine.

Pumps can get noisy and the impellor can rattle -normally they fail.

They are a low cost replacement and easily fitted (bayonet twist lock on the
drain pump housing)

A genuine Askoll twist bayonet replacement can be got a for a few pounds on Ebay for example.......

If you advise model code WAEXXXXXGB number then can advise the part
