Do you mean it tastes like salt or it looks like salt?
If it tastes like salt then it is salt. Either you have left the cap of the salt reservoir loose, or the water softener is malfunctioning.
If it looks like salt but isn't, it could be water hardness limescale. Either you have forgotten to fill the salt reservoir or the water softener is malfunctioning.
it tastes like salt, have put it through several cycles, checked salt compartment lid is secure, still getting salty film! If softener not working correctly is it an expensive job to repair? thank you
Bosch d/wrs usually last a long time, 5 years is not long. But suppose it costs you £100 for a callout and parts, I see from the Which reports that the Bosch SGS55C02 Classixx is about £280 and is one of the best buys (the Miele are even better but more expensive) AEG are also good.
Last time I bought a Bosch appliance (a F/Freezer, last year) it came with a 2-year guarantee and Bosch offered me an extension to 5 years for about £50 (retailers extended warranties are usually poor value)
My previous Bosch d/wr lasted 15 years before the handle broke, and the current one is 10 years old and working well, though I foolishly bought one with electronic display, which has faded and been replaced twice.
