Good afternoon

I am mending this lawnmower for a relative.

When turned on (both switches depressed) the mower starts to power up for a second, then goes dead before reaching any speed. If left for a few minutes the same happens.

Is this a switch problem, the capacitor, or is it likely to be a motor fault.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Cheers Blup

There's a good chance it's a switch problem, but an equally good chance is a severed cable, where it enters the switch handle.
Try moving the flex about a bit when trying to switch on, just to see what happens.

Many thanks

Have checked the cable and looked over the switch, both seem fine.

I also removed the plastic housing over the motor and a plume of smoke rises up from the top of the motor shaft, when the switch is applied.

Cheers

I'm afraid the insulation is failing on the commutator, if there's some smoke.....there's probably a fair bit of sparking from the brushes too.
It's unlikely the repair will be economic!
