I am in the process of completely smashing up all my Hotpoint appliances with a large sledge hammer. In the last 9 years I have had to replace 3 Hotpoint washing machines, two fridge freezers and two dishwashers. I refuse to allow any Hotpoint appliance into my house ever again.

So am I right in thinking that Bosch and Siemens are the best appliances? And are they both made by Bosch but relabeled by Siemens?

Should I venture down the Bosch/Siemens road to a better life, or should I consider other brands?

My 2p worth....

Bosch,Neff and Siemens are from the same group.
The main difference is i believe a 5 year warranty with the Siemens and 2 year standard with the Bosch.(and price)
Some of the bosch models are made in Spain and Poland and the German built models are reported to have the highest quality and longevity.
(you can tell from the door handle I believe -large is German made and will have the gmbh sticker on the rear)

I have been a Bosch fan for the last 15 years and have had one replacement machine and two breakdowns
(brushes/drain pump both easy DIY) in that time.
Parts are easy to find and there are lots of after market service.

Miele is deservedly the best machine money can buy but is pricey and parts are also expensive.(also service mainly from Miele)

You should be able to get an excellent machine for around £300... ie 1200 spin with bells and whistles or 1400 spin more basic.

Hope this helps!

My 2p worth too.

In 2006 we bought a Siemens american fridge/freezer. It was twice the price of an equivalent Samsung, but it looked nice.

It was a Samsung, with a siemens control panel!

Anyway, the compressor packed up 2 weeks after the 2 year warranty ran out. As I am a refrigeration engineer by trade, I knew that it was a Friday afternoon compressor from the start.

Siemens would not have any of it and refused to cover the repair, wanting over £600 to fix it. Eventually, after much moaning they reduced it to £400!! (compressor costs £85 trade)

I couldn't fix it myself because of the R600a refrigerant in modern fridges. You need a licence to buy it as it's butane, ie flammable.

Anyway, Siemens are no better than any other appliance, imo.

Hotpoint make terrible washing machines, though, I'll agree with you.

However, we now have a Hotpoint fridge (big one) which uses 10% of the electricity of the Siemens!

Thanks,

I think I will take a chance with Bosch. They are a bit more expensive but Ive heard they are well made. Siemens look good, but are even more expensive than Bosch.

Im happy to pay for quality, but I guess all appliances are prone to failure at some point due to the heavy use they get.

Ill feel happier when ive rid my home of Hotpoint. I hate them!

Bosch are pretty good, but bear in mind many 'brands' are made by others with subtle differences.

Our Siemens dishwasher is a Bosch.
Our siemens fridge was a samsung

etc etc

I think that Hotpoint are also made this way, Im sure i heard they also make a lot of cheaper brands, hence perhaps why they have gone down hill over the years.

Thanks for your advice.

My 2 cents.
You only get what you pay for. Buy cheap...& you will probably end up buying twice.

i've seen hotpoint dishwashers parts which are a bosch when opened up (DF61)
i've opened a whirlpool which is a bosch too
hotpoint washing machines parts have a link to ariston creda indesit new world

i would check the model number first and buy a good secondhand one. then look after it , you wouldn't have a car for 5 years and never clean it or check the oil ( well you might !! )
always in pocket that way, even if you get an unlucky purchase

Very interesting, thanks. The manufacturers seem to like to make it hard to know exactly what you are buying.

Ive taken the plunge and purchased a Bosch washing machine WAE2446BUK, and a bosch dishwasher SMS50E06UK.

Id be interested to know if they are the quality German made models, or a poorer quality European model?

Do they have the GMBH sticker on the rear?

cjapererborough, thanks for your help.

My washing machine has one of those stickers, so must be German. The dishwasher hasnt, so I assume must be made elsewhere.

Just got to decide whether to take Bosch up on their extended warranty offer, £99 increases dishwasher warranty from 2yrs to 5yrs. Cant remember what the extended warranty on the washing machine is.
