a washer dryer does use cold water to dry with beleive it or not.
it runs inside the condensor then into outer drum and pumped away
open soap drawer if you see no water coming in through here your pump or filter is blocked since the water from condensor is not getting away

breezer thank you for your interest, even though I understand that some water is used in the dryer operaton, the water that is getting into the main drum is the same pressure and quantity that gets through during a normal wash operation - any ideas whether the fault is either mechanical, electrical or something to do with the electronics of the machine?
