At any point in the washing m/c cycle when the drum should rotate the cycle stops and the 600+900 spin lamps flash. The drum is free to turn by hand and the belt is sound. The motor is free to turn by hand but does not switch on during the cycle.

Has it had a lot of use, brushes can wear and may need replacing, another thing to look at is the filter as a block pump will prevent a drum spinning.
Thanks. One brush was worn to almost nothing, the other one less than half way. I don't know why but new brushes fixed the machine.
