Im considering a box frame for a wall opening in sandstone cottage walls. Because of age, very likely the original walls are lime mortar, with minimal foundations. Opening will be approx 2.8 -3.0m internal ceiling height is about 2.2m. This is a gable end carrying a chimney with sandstone walls about 350-400mm 400mm thick so I suspect I'll need 2 frames adjacent to each other.

Any advice or experience of doing this please. I know I need a structural engineer but want to have some ideas or opinions when I instruct him.

Really you just need to ring up your engineer and say you want an opening of x width in a particular wall and they will do a site visit and run through your options

You may not need a box frame, it rather depends on whether the existing wall once the opening is formed will be strong enough for lateral wind load.

I expect you will need concrete pads to support the columns at each side of the opening and possibly a foundation going across the opening

the work will be pretty disruptive, Im sure you know that
