I have a 3 bedroom house but may as well be 2 and 1/2, I had the great idea of ripping the box over the stairwell out today :( not been my best one!! at the moment i have only took the step off but can now see a huge hole and floor boards. Is it possible for me to rip the entire thing out? strengthen the top of the stairwell and put shelves over it? or anything? its my little boys room and at the min he has a singlebed in there and i camt fit a wardobe in there either. please help!!
thanks

pic?

the box is normaly for head height in the stairway and would be suprised if you could remove it without falling through the bedroom floor into the stairwell..!!!

Boxing over stairs are often much larger than they need to be , you could build in a wardrobe incorporating the boxing over the stairs in the lower half, maybe disguising it as draws with some false draw fronts.

Couple years ago I had the same situation.
I resolved the problem by removing the bulkhead wall, repositioned it futher back overthe stairwell and increased the boxroom size by around 25%.
This is only possible if your landing configuration will allow you to do this.
You do need some experience in the trade re load bearing walls etc but it is not that difficult.
