I screwed in the batons to the the alcove back and sides. I cut the top and bottom boards to fit. Nailing the bottom board to the batons has proved very difficult. Any ideas re what to use to fasten the boards to the batons (preferably not glue)?

double sided adhesive tape, no nails do one that has quite a strong bond.

That will do, but you should construct the shelf off the wall and then slide it onto your baton, much easier than trying to assemble on the wall.
