Hi there,

We actually had a contractor pour all brand new concrete in our backyard. He laid down gravel put all the reinforcement and soaked down the surface beforehand - yet we have about 14 cracks - all over!

We are really bummed out, the contractor has not really given us much in ways of answers as to what he is going to do.

I was wondering, what is the typical resolution for this kind of problem? Do you rip out the concrete and re-do it? Since the concrete is colored, do you have to rip it all out (approx 360 sq. ft.)?

Any advice would be appreciated.

take this guy to the small claims court(uk) if he refuses to repair his work.he,d be very unlikely to match the cracks with the same colour concrete. it sounds like it,s dryed out too quick.he should have covered it with plastic whilst it dried.

sounds like this neads digging up and doing again .
ask yourself;
1/ did he use a wacker plate to tamper down the gravel?
2/ if it was a hot day did he cover it with plastic to get the hardest surface possible?
3/ did he lay it at a frosty time of year?
4/ if it,s used for parking a car on did he use steel mesh?

As area large, if cracks are more than superficial suggest you get Building surveyor to look at problem. Need expansion joint about every 10 foot or so.
Concrete may only be coloured near the surface also this may have weakened it if too much colour used.
Although concrete repair is not difficult why should you? After you get an expert opinion just tell the bodger in writing what he must do to put things right. If he refuses then its straight to small claims court. I never pay for job before completion just to avoid problem of extracting money.
