breaking a drinking glass?

is it possible to break a drinking glass ( wine or other stemmed variety ) by doing that thing where you rub your finger round the rim?

You wet your finger and rub it lightly round the rim and the glass starts to resonate with a high pitched tone..

I knew someone who taught his kids to do that, he later had several wine glasses crack half an inch below the rim, with the crack running round the circumference of the glass.

Don't know about breaking them, but I expect that if you wrapped some decent sandpaper round your finger you could eventually grind them down quite a bit!

Glass has a resonant frequency. This is the frequency at which it naturally vibrates. The louder the vibration, the more vigorously the glass is vibrating. Glass can only move so far before it will fail and break.

So, when you run your finger around the rim and create the humming noise, the louder you can make it 'hum' the further it is vibrating. Get it humming loud enough and it will break eventually!





PS: This has to be the shortest post with the largest amount of double entendres in it! 'Vibrate' 'Rim' 'Hum' ....
