Brick gate posts

Okay, I'm posting on behalf of my father who wants to build a brick pillar for a gate 4ft wide by 3ft high. While he is a practical man, he is partially sighted and 80 years old. The chances are my brother will assist him (another practical man) but neither has any significant experience of brick work.

I would really appreciate any suggestions.

That's a pretty open ended question. Care to narrow it down at all, because if you have no idea at all its going to need a long answer!
