Brick leafs not lining up for padstone

Hello there - I’m currently installing 2 x steels at the back of my house. There is an existing single storey extension, the steels will be opening up the back of the house to fully open plan.

The steels will bear on a padstone sat on the inner leaf of the gable end of the house.

The issue I have is the inner leaf of the existing extension does not follow through from the line of original house brickwork. It is around 30mm shy of where it should be.

Without the issue I would have removed the return and carried the inner leaf through to extension with bonded brick giving me a nice straight wall to bed the padstone.

Please see attached which hopefully makes clear the issue I am having.

Can anyone help with a solution here?

Thank you in advance.

Your SE should have detailed this for you.

As you have no 'nib', presumably you are using a spreader? (you can cut one from a length of 140 x 100 concrete lintel). What length the spreader needs to be depends on the load the beam is supporting and the compressive strength of the materials of both inner skins (again, your SE should have advised on the size of padstone/spreader required).

Assume- say - a spreader 600 long x 100 wide x 140 high. All you can do is put it fully on one skin and let the other end overhang either 30 mm into the cavity, or 30 mm into the room. Or alternatively split the difference 15/15. Yes, it will put an eccentric loading on one (or both) of the skins, and your Inspector will faint, but a small eccentricity can be accepted - it just has to be allowed for by assuming a lower value of compressive strength of the materials of each skin. The load soon 'spreads out' the further down the wall it goes so it shouldn't be a big issue, particularly if the beam is not of a long span or carrying particularly heavy loads.

What does your SE's calc's suggest?

Good morning, thank you both for your replies. Yes our SE has specified a spreader/padstone (440 x 140 x 215).

Unfortunately this issue was only just uncovered when we removed the nib and threw a level through the line of the existing brick work.

I’ll get on the phone to the SE this morning and post on here what they have to say.

Thanks.

Been onto the SE first thing and he has suggested concrete lintels beneath the pad stone to span the cavity and spread the load onto the outer leaf.

On that advice, two problems spring to mind:

1. cold- bridging causing condensation, damp and ultimately mould spores on the inner face of the bridging padstones and

2. Possibility of rain penetration across the cavity.

Email your SE on these points, but don't hold your breath waiting for a response.

Thanks Tony - there’s an existing extension on the side of the building making the wall an internal cavity wall so not worried about the above.

Had it been an external wall I would hasten to add point #3; a dirty great eye sore on the gable end!
