Brickies! Am I being ripped off?

I have a small mid terraced Victorian house. The front was clad in some awful crumbling concrete render which was trapping damp, so recently I removed this myself with an sds. Drill and a lot of swearing. Underneath I was pleased to find the actual brickwork was in half decent condition, however the pointing was in need of a repair. I then set about painstakingly raking out myself, and finally called in a so-called professional to infill with mortar.
He quoted me £650 for 4 days work, repointing with mortar, which I thought was a fair-ish price for 4 days work and materials.
However this man has used concrete-based mortar, which I have now been told is not the best for Victorian houses? Also he actually turned up at 3pm over 4 days, and worked until 6pm. All in all, he spent around 15 hours repointing my house - £650 for that amount of work now seems ridiculous. The finish on the house is poor, the mortar. Is sticking out in places and does not look ‘neat.’ When I asked him about this he said ‘ah you just have to let it set for about 3 weeks then brick acid will sort that out’ - when I asked how this works he said it should ‘fizzle the edges off.’ I don’t feel like his Brickie knows what he is talking about, but it is too late as he has done the repointing and it looks a mess. I asked him if he will come back in a month when it is ‘dried’ properly to finish off and he said he would brick acid it for me, however I’m not confident this will sort the mess of a job out. I feel quite conned with the amount of time he actually spent doing the work and with the finish so far being so shoddy I don’t know what to do? See if he can fix it or call someone else out? It took me ages to rake out and it was a lot of effort!!

You have been conned. I would not let him do any more work on the house. Don't pay him.

BTW 3 till 6 over 4 days is 12 hours not 15

Edit: probably not conned after seeing the photos. And he can be let back

Here are the progression pics: what he did on day 1, 2, 3 And 4. Close ups of the rough edge finish I’m talking about - is this acceptable?

I'm wondering how neat it all looked when the rendering was hacked off?
Do you have any progressive photo's?
The brickwork was largely entire, apart from above the doors and window arches where the render had ‘stuck’ to the triangle patterned bricks and they broke off when removing render.
Attached pictures 1) After raking out old mortar 2) after Brickie I paid £650 repointed

Why?
That façade was never going to win brickwork of the year award in any case, especially considering how it looked prior to it being raked out.

It's ****e. Unfortunately it's what I expect from "tradesmen" these days. Quite apart that he has used the wrong mortar according to the OP his mortaring technique is awful. I'm no bricky but even I could do a better job than that.

Totally wish I’d done it myself as I would’ve taken my time and defo made it a bit prettier. I will see what the guy has to say for himself, but does anyone have any ideas about how to rectify this? So far I’ve tried to stay away from sandblasting the front, but would it look better if it was sandblasted or is that going to make a bad situation worse?
Would a wire grinding/disc pad do anything?
I want to go back to the brickie and tell him either fix it, or pay me to get someone else to fix. So disappointed right now.

That's like getting a face lift and coming out looking as bad, then the doctor tells you you were not going to win a beauty contest either way :p

Not sure about that...check out this render BEFORE. I don’t think anything could be quite as bad as that

Have you paid him? I think you're out of options if you have.

You wanted your house pointed, you agreed a price, and he's done it. It doesn't matter if it took 4 hours or 4 days he's done the work.

He's not done a great job, but he's done what you agreed.

If I’d have known beforehand that this would be the outcome - never would’ve employed him. I paid him on fourth day because he assured me that this kind of finish is ‘quite normal’ and it would be ‘all finished off with a bit of brick acid’ after 3/4 weeks of drying out.
Not being a builder I have taken him at his word, but starting to regret this decision...feel a bit out of my depth and don’t know how to come back at him.
