I've just starting boarding the loft and I've hit a problem. On top of the internal walls there are bricks which are cemented in, but they are uneven and some protrude above the timber joists, so the boards don't fit flat on the joists. The house was built in the mid 80's.

What is the purpose of these bricks, and can you safely remove them before putting the boards down? On most of them the cement is loose and the bricks can come right out. Or would it be better to hack a bit more off the bricks and put them back?

If you boarded it so that the boards were not flat i.e. with the boards resting partly on these bricks, would this put undue strain on the internal walls when up in the loft?

As long as they are above your ceiling height and are not going to leave gaps visible in the rooms below just take them out. They serve no purpose at all.
