I have a property which has step cracking going up the rear side of the house above the first floor, the cracking varies in size over an area of 2m in length to 1.5 in hight, we had a structural engineer look at it and he has said it looks like it was caused when the house was extended.

Is it just a simple case of filling the cracks with mortar or would it require more work.

Thanks

Pictures of the crack would help to give an opinion. Is the gap wider at the top than it is at the bottom

Whether filling only or more work depends on what is causing the crack. Too often an extension is built on foundations that allow the extension to sink a few milli-metres and this causes cracking between old and new brickwork. Most of the time the sinking stops after a few weeks, but if it doesn't and the cracks keep widening then the foundations of the extension may need to be looked at / under pinned.
