Broken Sewage Manhole Cover in Garden - Responsibility?

Firstly our house is a 1960's house if that matters.

Who's responsible for the mains sewage inspection cover. Me or the water board (united utilities)?
I seem to remember my Mother getting hers replaced because it was dangerous.

Ours is in our garden but it's totally knackered (metal frame rusted and concrete cover breaking up) to the point where I have put some bricks on it to prevent anyone falling through. I'm not sure if it's a shared drain because I dare not lift the cover for fear of not getting it back in place

If not it is likely to be your responsibility.

You need to establish if it only serves your house or it serves anyone else's property.

Try phoning United Utilities and asking if it is one of theirs. Be friendly and polite and you will probably get a helpful response.
