Hi all. I’m in the process of trying to improve the appearance of an older style uPVC window (assumed older given the harder edges, as opposed to modern style rounded edges). There is a lot of brown material around the edge of the frame which I have had to remove, but I’m unsure of what it is.
The material is dark brown in colour, and the colour is homogenous throughout. It is stretchy/flexible, and peels off in strips. It also breaks down into smaller chunks. I imagine it is some kind of old silicone/ caulking, however I am a little concerned because the HSE website mentions that there is such thing as asbestos caulk, and I am unsure of the age of the caulking I have found. That being said, most of the images I have found on Google of asbestos caulk seem to be white-grey in colour, and appear like hard, brittle putty; whereas the stuff I’ve found is completely brown and stretchy like silicone.
Some pictures below. If anyone has come across this material before or knows what it might be, I’d be interested to hear! Thanks
