Hey oop lads !! This is gonna cost at some time or another.

Bt is upgrading from 17th Feb 2005 Broadband users from the min BB (1GB month limit) to 1Mb / sec --- and us 512 Kb/sec (15GB month limit) and the 1 Mb /sec (30GB month limit)wallahs, to 2Mb / sec

I note at least one ISP has tentatively started to follow suite.

Apparently this will take place over a 5 month period, and we will get the stated width or whatever our lines will allow whichever is greater.

Who is the other ISP?

I have been needing faster access for years but I can't justify the expenditure of a cap-free 1mb or 2mb connection just yet. If I get upgraded for free then, brilliant!

BT offers speedier broadband

BT has cranked up the speed of all its broadband services at no extra cost to existing customers.
From 17 Feb, BT Broadband at £24.99 and BT Yahoo at £26.99 will both rise from 512Kbps connections to 2Mbps. Both have a 15GB monthly usage limit.
On 24 March, the £17.99 a month Broadband Basic service will double to 1Mbps it has a 1GB storage limit - and the £29.99 a month BT Yahoo service will double to 2Mbps and limit you to 30GB of storage a month. All have a free modem and connection.
Ian Livingston, chief executive at BT Retail, said: "BT is about giving value for money. Today we are offering customers up to four times the broadband speed without charging a penny more. It will allow customers to get even more from their broadband services for entertainment, education or communication."
A BT spokesman added: "It's like swapping your Mondeo for a Porsche on the information superhighway - for no extra cost."

Earlier this week, AOL announced it will double the speeds of all its broadband services on Valentine's Day. It will now offer a 1Mbps connection at £24.99 a month and a 2Mbps service for £29.99 a month, but does not limit the amount you can download each month.
Jonathan Lambeth, director of communications at AOL UK, said: "We think that with faster speeds and a growing array of video and music content, usage limits will become even more of an anachronism and perceived very negatively by consumers. Let the sports car have the fuel we say."

Do you mean "whichever is smaller" ? BT wouldn't sell me more than 512Kb because I live so far from the exchange - they didn't think the line would provide more.

Sorry, meant you'll get up to the new width, or if the line is incapable of that width, then you'll get max that the line can carry.

I have 1mbps access at 17.99 per month. The cap is quite low but i wait to see if i'll go over it...

So we get upgrade from Mondeo to Porsche .... Get a taste for performance --- Then get hit for more dosh via some horrible tiered download limitation .... Looks like they have the technology to charge extra for exceeding usage limits, I see an electricity / gas type bill on the horizon based on usage not bandwidth !! Rippping times to come !!

I have NTL broadband for which i pay £17.99pcm for a 300k connection. Whilst surfing today I have found this deal https://secure.ntlfreedom.com/broadband_512k.aspx
but it doesn't seem to be available to cable subscribers. Anyone else noticed this too?

NTL ripping the consumer off yet again
