I need to build the above for a conservatory base to get the level I need.
Can anyone tell me how to about this so that my base will be level.
I have done the foundations ok and need to make sure the wall will be level all the way round.
A link to bricklaying would be reallly helpful.
Thanks :D

the other way to do it is with a spirit level, a couple of posts and some string!.

Find the datum you want ie where the finished level of the concrete will be. Mark it on the existing wall and put a post in. Tie the string to that level and run it out to the other corner. put a post in there and then level up the string on that post. Work out your coursing down the posts, move the string down to the first course. Do that for all the corners and youve marked out your levels for the brickwork. Now build your three courses of brickwork at each corner. youve now got your corners done and they should all be at the right level (you can check them with a long piece of batten and the spirit level on top) Now build the courses between the corners, using your string line as a guide for the level and to make sure the wall is straight and roberts your mothers brother! ;)

Thanks Thermo.

I did build it prior to your post but it resembled a life on the ocean waves and I HAD TO TAKE IT DOWN. :(

Going to get a brickie in as I need the floor to be level, :D

I know when I'm beat but appeciated all the replies :D

wouldnt be wobbly if you did as suggested and youd save money and feel great sense of achievment when done! ;)

Thermo is right - try again..
It's not a massive amount of bricks. If you take your time and keep checking there's no reason why you won't get a satisfactory job at the end. At least you now know what it looks like when it's wrong!!
Knock the muck of those bricks and have another go - it will be satisfing

Thanks for the encouragement lads but at the risk of sounding thick, I can't seem to grasp how to get the bricks level all the way round.

I need to build a wall 3 courses up, 10 ft x18 ft x 10ft for my concrete floor to go into.
Obviously the 18 ft wall is going to be on show and will look stupid if it is bowing. Are you saying the string (when level using a line level) will give me the correct height :?:

Assuming that your foundations are level, lay the first course of bricks for one corner on the foundation (about four bricks long in each direction) use a spirit level to make sure this course is level. This is corner A. Go to the next corner and bed down one brick on some mortar, ensuring it is level. This is corner B. Take the line and trap it between a couple of loose bricks and the first course at corner A. Run the line to the corner B and trap it between the first laid brick and a loose brick. Make sure the line is taught, but dont pull it so hard as to dislodge the brick. Take a spirit level and check the line is level, make any adjustments to corner B as required to get it level. Finish the rest of the course by bringing the height of the bricks up to the level of the line. Bingo, one straight course of bricks. Now you get the idea of how to use the line. Still check your bricks for level in the opposite plane and vertically, using a spirit level.

Thanks to you all but I got a brickie in and got it done for £40

This brings me to the next stage and i would be grateful for your assistance on my new thread. :D
