building larger new garage on top of site of old one. builder wants to cut through old floor slab (6 inch) for foundations and leave old slab in place rather than break up old slab and put in hardcore and new floor. is this acceptable?, plans state to put in new floor, will building control get upset?

is there room for a new floor slab on top of the existing?

if not i would insist, if not for d.p.m reasons alone that a new floor slab be installed as per drawings.

building control are interested in dpm lapping onto dpc, floor insulation and in some cases they may even look at the hardcore.

in all of the integral new garage floor slabs i have laid and due to the fact that a garage slab tends to be 100-150mm lower than the dpc, we have not bothered lapping the dpm as this renders it visible above the slab. it ends up being damaged or simply cut away for aesthetic reasons anyhow.
