Does anyone know what builders paper/building paper is? On another forum, it was recommended as the best thing to use for covering the space between rafters. The idea being it would stop dust from filling the loft and yet be breathable. The problem is I don't know what it is or where to get it from. Google does not have much that is UK based and neither do the major DIY stores. Ay help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's just like brown wrapping paper, but has a waxy coating.

Most proper/larger merchants should stock it, and if you seach this or the building section, there is a post with a web supplier link.

IMO, it is a significant fire risk and I would not use it in this situation

Any of the breathable membranes commonly used for roofing will be better.

As you are in the West Midlands, the cheapest place I know is a merchants in Moseley, Birmingham - £50 fo 50m roll.

Is that Manjit Bros, I only live 10m from them.

When you say any breathable membrane, can you please name one, or provide a link to what I should go for. I'm a bit useless at this sort of thing, and nothing is ever labelled as to what it does.

thanks

What do you thik would be the best way to attach a breathable membrane? Should I use smal tacks or staples? Also, should I just hang it over the rafters and fix it, or should I cut it and fit it in between the rafters, thereby leaving the wooden rafter exposed?

A staple gun is easier, but you can use small clout nails which have a big head.

You fix it to the underside of the rafters, not in between, and as this is just for dirt prevention, you only need to lap it by about 50mm, but you should tape the laps.

great. think that's it. by the way, why do i need to tape the edges and what tape should I use: brown parcel tape or duck tape?

If you don't tape the laps, then the material will likely sag and let grit through. Use duct tape
